The World symbolism
A dancing figure wrapped in a violet sash floats inside a large oval laurel wreath tied with red ribbons. She holds a wand in each hand. In the four corners, an angel, an eagle, a lion and a bull, the same figures seen on the Wheel of Fortune, now appear complete and at peace. The journey that began with The Fool has come full circle.
The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.
Upright meaning
- completion
- fulfillment
- wholeness
- achievement
The World is the card of completion, fulfilment and wholeness. It shows that a cycle is ending successfully: a goal has been reached, a lesson integrated or a journey completed.
In a reading, The World favours graduations, achievements, travel, international connections and a deep sense of being in the right place. It also prepares you for the next beginning. Its number is twenty-one, the last trump of the Major Arcana.
Reversed meaning
- unfinished business
- shortcuts
- delays
Reversed, The World shows unfinished business. You may be close to completion but something is missing, or you may be seeking shortcuts to avoid the final step.
The reversed card asks what still needs to be tied up. Closure is within reach once the last piece is in place.

Number, element and astrology
The World is card 21 (XXI) of the Major Arcana, the 22 trump cards that describe life's big lessons and turning points. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system, which shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it is attributed to the Hebrew letter Tav and to Saturn, giving it the element of earth. In numerology, 21 reduces to 3, linking it with The Empress.
