How the tarot birth card calculation works

Mary K. Greer's method uses only your full date of birth and the numbers of the 22 Major Arcana cards. Here is how to do it by hand:

1. Add your birth month, birth day and full birth year as ordinary numbers. For example, month 4 + day 26 + year 1989.
2. Add the digits of that total together.
3. If the result is higher than 21, add its digits again. A total of 22 is not treated as The Fool in this method; it reduces to 2 + 2 = 4, The Emperor.
4. If the result is a two-digit number from 10 to 21, that card is your Personality card. Add its two digits to get a single-digit number, which is your Soul card.
5. If the result is a single digit from 1 to 9, that one card is both your Personality card and your Soul card.

The Personality card describes how you express yourself, the qualities other people tend to notice and the way you approach challenges. The Soul card points to your deeper purpose, the themes that keep returning throughout your life. Because The Fool is numbered zero and is not reached by adding digits, it does not appear as a birth card in this system. Greer and many readers see The Fool as the energy present in everyone, the traveler who passes through all of the other cards.

Worked examples you can check

Here are three real calculations so you can see every possible outcome. Each one was checked step by step.

Example one produces a classic pair. The person born on April 26, 1989 has The Hanged Man as a Personality card and The Empress as a Soul card. They may come across as someone who sees things from an unusual angle and is willing to pause or let go, while underneath they are a nurturer and a creator.

Example two reduces straight to a single digit. Someone born on July 23, 1985 has Strength as both cards, which makes the qualities of patience, courage and compassion especially concentrated. Greer's work notes that the higher card in the same family, The Star (17), still belongs to their constellation and can act as a teacher even though it is not one of their birth cards.

Example three is the special case. Only the number 19 produces three birth cards, because 19 reduces to 10 and 10 reduces again to 1. People born with this total have The Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and The Magician all at once.

The nine birth card constellations

Every birth card belongs to one of nine families, called constellations, grouped by the single digit they reduce to. Your Soul card tells you which constellation is yours.

Notice that constellations 1, 2 and 3 have three cards, while 4 through 9 have only two. That is simply because the Major Arcana stops at 21, so there is no card 22 through 27 to join the later families. It does not mean some constellations are more important than others.

How to work with your birth cards

Birth cards are most useful as a mirror, not a label. They describe tendencies and lessons, not a fixed destiny. A few ways to make them part of your practice:

• Pull them from your deck. Place your Personality and Soul cards side by side and study the imagery. What do the figures have in common? What is different?
• Journal with them. Write about a time you acted like your Personality card and a time you felt your Soul card's lesson at work.
• Watch for them in readings. When your birth cards appear in a spread, many readers take it as a sign that the situation touches something central to who you are.

Birth cards, astrology and numerology

The birth card method borrows its arithmetic from numerology, where a birth date is reduced to a single life path number. The difference is that tarot allows numbers up to 21 before reducing, so many people get a two-card combination with more nuance than a single digit. Your Soul card number often matches your numerology life path number when that number is 1 through 9, although numerologists sometimes treat master numbers like 11 and 22 differently.

Birth cards also work well alongside astrology. The nine birth card constellations

The Magician, Wheel of Fortune and The Sun

With the Magician as your soul card, you carry the energy of the one who starts things. You tend to be quick, resourceful and verbal, able to see how the tools already in front of you can become something new. If your personality card is the Wheel of Fortune, life keeps handing you turning points, and your lesson is to work with cycles instead of forcing outcomes. If it is The Sun, you radiate warmth and confidence and people are drawn to your openness. Your strengths are initiative, focus and a gift for communication. Your strengths are intuition, discretion, sound judgment and emotional depth. The challenge is withdrawal: keeping too much hidden, over-analyzing, or judging yourself and others harshly. The Emperor and Death

The Emperor as soul card gives you a strong sense of order, responsibility and leadership. If your personality card is Death, your life moves through clear chapters, and you have an unusual capacity to release what is finished and rebuild from the ground up. Your strengths are reliability, discipline, protectiveness and the courage to make hard calls. The challenge is rigidity: holding on to control, resisting change, or treating feelings as problems to manage. The soul lesson is that true authority includes the wisdom to let things transform. You build best when you accept that every structure has a season. In love you are loyal, steady and protective, and you show care through actions and commitment. You need a partner who respects your need for stability yet gently invites you to soften, adapt and share power.

The Hierophant and Temperance

The Hierophant as soul card makes you a seeker of meaning and a natural teacher. You value knowledge, ethics and shared traditions, and you often become the person others come to for guidance. If your personality card is Temperance, you have a gift for moderation, blending opposites and finding the middle path, and people often feel calmer around you. Your strengths are wisdom, patience, loyalty and the ability to mentor. If your personality card is The Star, you are hopeful, idealistic and often inspiring, with a talent for healing and for seeing the best in people. Your strengths are endurance, kindness, self-control and faith in the future. The challenge is suppressing your own needs, being too hard on yourself, or becoming discouraged when reality does not match your ideals. The soul lesson is inner strength that comes from self-acceptance, not from grinding it out alone. In love you are loyal, tender and patient, and partners often feel safe with you. The Hermit and The Moon

The Hermit as soul card gives you a reflective, independent nature and a lifelong search for wisdom.
