Wheel of Fortune symbolism

A great wheel marked with the letters T-A-R-O (or ROTA) and the Hebrew letters of the divine name turns in the sky. A sphinx sits on top, a snake descends on one side and an Anubis-like figure rises on the other. In the four corners, a winged angel, eagle, lion and bull read books: the fixed signs of the zodiac and the four evangelists. Everything rises and falls, but the centre stays still.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

Upright meaning

• turning point
• luck
• cycles
• change

The Wheel of Fortune is the card of cycles, turning points and luck. It signals that a change is coming that is at least partly outside your control, and in its upright position the change is usually favourable.

In a reading, the Wheel reminds you that nothing is permanent. Good fortune should be enjoyed and used wisely; difficult phases will pass. It favours opportunities that seem to arrive by chance, as well as the recognition that you are part of a bigger pattern. Its number is ten, a new cycle beginning.

Reversed meaning

• setbacks
• resisting change
• repeating patterns

Reversed, the Wheel points to setbacks, bad timing or resisting a change that is already happening. It can also highlight repeating patterns: the same situation coming back because the lesson has not been learned.

Focus on what you can control. You cannot stop the wheel, but you can change how you respond when it turns.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system, which shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it is attributed to the Hebrew letter Kaph and to Jupiter, giving it the element of fire. Wheel of Fortune in question readings

What Wheel of Fortune says when it lands in a specific position. These are the interpretations our free readings by question show for this card.

• As their feelings (Does my ex still love me?): This person's feelings are shifting. What they felt before is changing, and they may think about you when life turns unexpectedly. Their emotions move in cycles, and fate may be stirring them toward you again.
• As what they are not showing (Does he like me?): They are hiding uncertainty about timing. Beneath the surface, they wonder if this is the right moment. Life circumstances may be affecting how openly they can act on their feelings.
• As the outcome in a reconciliation reading (Will he come back?): This leans toward a turning point. Change is coming, and fortune favors movement. The Wheel often signals a reunion or a surprise contact, though it may equally mark the end of one cycle and the start of another.
• As what is coming in love (Will I find love?): A turning point is coming. The Wheel of Fortune suggests a fateful meeting or sudden change in your romantic life. Luck is shifting in your favor, and destiny may surprise you.
• As the outcome for work (Will I get the job?): This leans toward a positive change in fortune. Good luck, a sudden opportunity, or an upward turn in finances is likely. Ride the momentum while it lasts, and prepare for future cycles.
• As advice (What should I do?): Go with the flow of change. Seize opportunities that appear, and trust that timing is working in your favor. Stay flexible and optimistic. This is a moment to move with life, not against it.
• Reversed in a love reading (Will we get back together?): Reversed, the Wheel suggests bad timing or repeating old patterns. A reunion now might simply replay what went wrong. Resistance to change keeps you stuck. Break the cycle before reopening the door.
