Tarot Spreads: Layouts, Positions and How to Use Them
A spread is the layout of cards in a reading. Each position has a meaning, such as past, obstacle or advice, and that position shapes how a card is read. The same card means something different as "what is blocking you" than as "the likely outcome".
Choose the spread for the question, not the other way round. A simple question deserves a simple spread; a complex situation benefits from more positions. Below are the spreads we use most, with full guides and free tools to practise.

How to choose a spread

Five rules that make any spread work better
- Decide the positions before you draw. Changing them after seeing the cards turns a reading into wishful thinking.
- Ask open questions. "What do I need to understand about…" gives richer answers than "Will…".
- Read the story, not just the cards. Notice repeated suits, numbers and the flow from one position to the next.
- Count the Major Arcana. Several trumps suggest the situation is significant or long-term.
- End with an action. The best readings finish with one concrete step you can take.
