Love questions are the most common in tarot and the easiest to read badly. This five-card spread keeps the focus on the dynamic between two people, and on what you can do, rather than on guessing someone else's private thoughts.

How to frame a relationship question

Ask about the relationship and your part in it: "What do I need to understand about where we are?" rather than "Does he love me?" or "Will she come back?". Questions about a third person, such as an ex's new partner, rarely lead anywhere helpful. Reading the pair of cards 1 and 2

• Same suit: you meet in the same area (both emotional, both practical).
• Fire and water (Wands and Cups): passion and feeling, strong but sometimes volatile.
• Air and earth (Swords and Pentacles): one thinks, the other acts; complementary if you talk.
• Two court cards: two personalities; compare their elements.
• A Major Arcana card in one position: that person is going through something bigger than the relationship.

Common mistakes

• Reading card 2 as proof of what someone thinks. It shows how they appear in the dynamic.
• Ignoring card 4 because it is uncomfortable. It is usually where the solution is.
• Repeating the spread daily in the hope that the outcome changes.
• Using the reading to justify staying in a relationship that hurts you. No card outweighs your safety.
