Nine of Cups symbolism

The Nine of Cups is traditionally called the wish card. It represents contentment, pleasure and the moment when something you hoped for actually arrives. Emotionally and materially, you have enough, and the card invites you to notice that.

It favours enjoying the good things in life: a comfortable home, good food, time with people you like and pride in what you have built. The subtle lesson in the image is about sharing: happiness displayed only for yourself can become smugness, while happiness shared becomes the Ten of Cups.

In tarot numerology, 9 is the number of culmination and the last step before completion. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Jupiter in Pisces and gave it the title Lord of Material Happiness.

Nine is near-completion, and in water it is emotional contentment. Jupiter in Pisces, where the benefic planet is especially at home, makes this one of the most fortunate cards in the deck. The Golden Dawn called it Material Happiness, hinting that this is the satisfaction of desires rather than deeper fulfilment.
