Eight of Cups symbolism
Under a crescent moon, a figure in a red cloak walks away from eight stacked cups, climbing toward rocky mountains. The cups are arranged carefully, but there is a gap in the stack, as if something is missing.
The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

Number, element and astrology
The Eight of Cups belongs to the suit of Cups (also called Chalices or Hearts in playing-card terms), the water suit that deals with emotions, love, relationships, intuition and creativity. In tarot numerology, 8 is the number of movement, mastery and momentum. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Saturn in Pisces and gave it the title Lord of Abandoned Success.
Eight is movement, and here the movement is away from emotional investments that no longer satisfy. Saturn in Pisces, discipline in the sign of dissolution, gives the card its quiet, sad resolve. The Golden Dawn titled it Abandoned Success: something worked, but it is no longer what the soul wants.
