Seven of Cups symbolism

A figure stands before seven cups floating in clouds. Each contains something different: a head, a veiled figure, a snake, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath and a dragon. Some are dreams, some are temptations and some are illusions.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

In tarot numerology, 7 is the number of testing, assessment and inner work. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Venus in Scorpio and gave it the title Lord of Illusionary Success.

Seven tests its element, and water tested by imagination produces visions. Venus in Scorpio, desire at its most intense, explains the seductive power of the cups. The Golden Dawn called it Illusory Success: every option shines, but not every option is real.
