Death symbolism

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black flag decorated with a white rose. Before him lie a fallen king, a kneeling bishop, a young woman and a child, showing that change comes to everyone. In the distance, the sun rises between two towers. The rising sun is the part most people miss: the card is about what comes after an ending.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

Death is the card of endings and transformation, and it almost never refers to physical death. It shows that a chapter is closing so that something new can begin. The ending may be a relationship, a job, a belief or a version of yourself you have outgrown.

The card can feel intense, but its message is ultimately freeing. Clearing space is necessary for growth. Resisting the change only prolongs the discomfort. Its number is thirteen, a number traditionally associated with transformation.

Reversed, Death points to resisting an ending that is already happening. You may be clinging to a situation out of fear, habit or nostalgia, which keeps you stuck in something that no longer serves you.

The reversed card asks what you are holding on to and why. Letting go is often less frightening than the stagnation of staying.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system, which shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it is attributed to the Hebrew letter Nun and to Scorpio, giving it the element of water. In numerology, 13 reduces to 4, linking it with The Emperor.
