Death symbolism
A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black flag decorated with a white rose. Before him lie a fallen king, a kneeling bishop, a young woman and a child, showing that change comes to everyone. In the distance, the sun rises between two towers. The rising sun is the part most people miss: the card is about what comes after an ending.
The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system, which shaped the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, it is attributed to the Hebrew letter Nun and to Scorpio, giving it the element of water.
