Seven of Swords symbolism

A man tiptoes away from a military camp carrying five swords in his arms, glancing back over his shoulder with a half-smile. Two swords remain planted in the ground behind him, and soldiers can be seen in the distance, unaware. He believes he has got away with it.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

The Seven of Swords is the card of strategy, secrecy and sometimes deception. It can show someone acting behind the scenes, taking what is not theirs or avoiding responsibility. It can also show you thinking tactically, working alone and not revealing your plans too early.

The key question is ethics. Clever strategy is not the same as cheating. If you are tempted to cut corners, the card warns that the two swords left behind may give you away. If someone around you is acting strangely, it asks you to pay attention to what does not add up.

In tarot numerology, 7 is the number of testing, assessment and inner work. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Moon in Aquarius and gave it the title Lord of Unstable Effort.

Seven tests its element, and air tested becomes cunning. The Moon in Aquarius, unconventional and detached, explains the card's lone-wolf strategy. The Golden Dawn titled it Unstable Effort: a plan that may work, but rests on shaky ground.
