Seven of Wands symbolism

A man stands on high ground and defends himself with a wand against six others rising from below. He wears two different shoes, as if he had to rush into the fight unprepared, yet his position gives him the advantage.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

In tarot numerology, 7 is the number of testing, assessment and inner work. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Mars in Leo and gave it the title Lord of Valour.

Seven is the number of testing and assessment, and in fire the test is courage. Mars in Leo gives the card its fighting spirit. The Golden Dawn named it Valour: the defender is outnumbered, but his position and conviction make up the difference.
