The Fool symbolism

A young traveller steps toward the edge of a cliff with a white rose in one hand and a small bundle on a staff over his shoulder. A white dog jumps at his heels, the sun blazes behind him and snow-capped mountains sit far in the distance. The rose stands for pure intention, the bundle for everything he needs and nothing more, and the cliff for the unknown he is about to meet. The Fool carries the number zero: he stands outside the sequence of the other trumps, which is why many readers see the whole Major Arcana as the Fool's journey.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

The Fool is the card of beginnings that come before you feel ready. It shows up when a door is opening and the only way to find out what lies behind it is to walk through. The energy is light, curious and a little naive, and that naivety is a strength: you are not yet weighed down by the reasons something might fail.

In a reading, The Fool asks you to trust the process more than the plan. It favours travel, new projects, moves, fresh relationships and any situation where you have to learn by doing. It does not promise that nothing will go wrong. It promises that the experience will teach you something you could not have learned by waiting.

Reversed, The Fool splits into two opposite warnings. Sometimes it points to recklessness: jumping without looking, ignoring obvious risks or treating a serious decision like a game. Other times it shows the opposite, a fear of the unknown so strong that you refuse to move at all.

Ask which one fits. If you are about to leap, check the ground first. If you have been standing at the edge for months, the reversed Fool suggests the cost of staying still has quietly become higher than the risk of stepping out.
