Three of Swords symbolism
A red heart floats against a grey, stormy sky, pierced by three swords. Rain falls in the background. It is one of the most direct images in the tarot: nothing is hidden, and nothing softens the pain.
The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.
Upright meaning
- heartbreak
- hurt
- painful truth
- sorrow
The Three of Swords is heartbreak, grief and painful truth. It shows emotional pain that has to be felt rather than avoided: a break-up, a betrayal, harsh words or a disappointment that cuts deep.
The card does not say you will stay in this pain. The rain in the image is also cleansing, and storms pass. It asks you to acknowledge the hurt honestly, because pain that is felt can heal, while pain that is buried tends to return.
Reversed meaning
- healing
- releasing pain
- forgiveness
Reversed, the Three of Swords shows healing, releasing pain and forgiveness. The worst is passing.
It can also warn about suppressing grief or reopening old wounds repeatedly. Healing requires both feeling and letting go.
