Three of Pentacles symbolism

A stonemason stands on a bench working on a cathedral arch while two figures, a monk and a noble holding plans, consult with him. Three pentacles are carved into the arch above them. Each person brings a different skill to the same building.

The Three of Pentacles belongs to the suit of Pentacles (also called Coins or Disks; Diamonds in playing-card terms), the earth suit that deals with money, work, the body, home and material security. In tarot numerology, 3 is the number of growth, expression and first results. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Mars in Capricorn and gave it the title Lord of Material Works.

Three brings the first product of union, and in earth that product is a built thing. Mars in Capricorn, energy used with discipline, is the ideal placement for craftsmanship. The Golden Dawn called it Material Works: the cathedral is built by many hands.
