Esmun was a Western Semitic (Phoenician) god of healing. This god was originally known from the Iron Age period as Sidon, his cult spread as far as Carthage, Cyprus, and Sardinia. Esmun was possibly later syncretized with the god Melqart and in Hellenic times the physician god Asklepios. His name was later connected with the mother goddess Caelestis. A.G.H.
