Eris was the Greek goddess of strife, the consort of Ares, and the mother of Horkos (oath). She is depicted as throwing an apple of discord among the guests at a wedding, offering it "to the fairest" to provoke an argument. In Roman mythology she became Discordia. A.G.H.
