Two of Cups symbolism

A man and a woman face each other, each holding a cup, as if exchanging vows. Above them floats a caduceus, the staff of Hermes with two intertwined snakes, topped by a winged lion's head. A house rests on a hill behind them.

The descriptions on this site refer to the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909), illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and designed with Arthur Edward Waite, which is the reference for most modern tarot. Other decks may show different imagery with a similar meaning.

Upright meaning

The Two of Cups represents partnership, mutual attraction and a connection between equals. It is the card of two people meeting halfway, whether in romance, friendship or business.

The key word is mutual. Both people give and both receive. The caduceus suggests that this union has healing potential: together, the two create something neither could alone.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the Two of Cups shows imbalance in a relationship, misunderstandings or a disconnection that has not been addressed. It can also indicate a break-up or a partnership ending.

Ask what has shifted and whether both people still want the same thing.

Number, element and astrology

The Two of Cups belongs to the suit of Cups (also called Chalices or Hearts in playing-card terms), the water suit that deals with emotions, love, relationships, intuition and creativity. In tarot numerology, 2 is the number of choice, balance and partnership. The Golden Dawn assigned this card to Venus in Cancer and gave it the title Lord of Love.

Two is union and polarity, and in water it becomes the meeting of two hearts. Venus in Cancer, love in the sign of home and care, rules the card. The Golden Dawn titled it Love. The caduceus above the couple is a symbol of balance between opposites and of healing.
