**Next leap year** will be on **2020**

The following leap years will be 2024, 2028, 2032,2036, 2040 and so on

How often is? Every four years there is a new leap year.

**Last leap year** was on 2012.

We can also talk about the next 29th of February.

## Meaning

A** leap year** is a year with one more day, 366 days. If we want to understand why there are leap years we should look at the movement of the Earth around the Sun: our planet rotates 365.24219 times during a complete orbit around the star, so a year lasts 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds, not 365.

Emperor Julius Caesar came up with the creation of the leap year. If we count those 365 days every year, we lose those 5 hours that we will have to recover. For three years we counted those 365 and in the fourth we recovered the day that is missing, the 29 days that has February, the leap year.

## How to calculate leap years

It is very easy to calculate if a year is a leap year. You only have to check if the year is divisible by 4, 100 and 400.

If it is divisible then it is a leap year. if not then it is a common year.
