Sinister comes from Latin meaning “left” or that which is on the left-hand side. Simultaneously it has come to signify something undesirable or unfortunate. Catholics generally will not bless themselves, make the sign of the cross, left handed. The belief, or superstition, seems to be universal. A foreign missionary who himself was left handed passed the communion plate to the natives and they would not take communion. Left handed pitchers at one time were called south paws or lefties. In occultism, sinister refers to the left-handed-path, associated with black magic and sorcery. A.G.H
