Ningal, great queen, Mesopotamian (Babylonian-Sumerian-Akkadian), was the reed goddess, the daughter of Enki and Ningikuga. She was the consort of the moon god Nanna by whom she bore Utu, the sun god. Probably she was first worshipped by cowherds in the southern Mesopotamian marsh lands, chiefly around Ur. A.G.H.
