Midewiwin, known as the Medicine Lodge Society, is the most important of the Algonquin ceremonies. The practitioners are called Midew, and the practices of Midewiwin are referred to as Mide. The Miigis, or cowrie, shell is used in ceremonies along with bundles and sacred items. Associated with these ceremonies are many oral teachings, symbols, stories, and wisdom that has been passed from generation to generation. Even today it is performed to ensure the health of the tribal members and their prosperity. Dances occur among tribes around the Great Lakes of the Northeast United States and Canada. A.G.H.
