Meter, Greek Mother Goddess, was in essence the great mother of all gods, and most closely equated to Gaea. She was widely revered throughout the Grecian Empire and worshipped mainly by individuals rather than large cult followings. She is also known as Meteroriae (mother of the mountain). It is surmised that her popularity spread from northern Ionia. Herodotus mentioned a festival of Meter in Kyzikos; probably derived originally from the western Asiatic great mother (see Kybele).
