Mariyamman (Mother of smallpox), a plague goddess, Davidian (Tamil) (southern India), is a terrible goddess, one of the navashtis of Kali. She is honored in a ritual which the victims (in penance) are suspended from a rope and an iron hook through the flesh on the back and whittled around a pole.
