Egeria was the Roman fertility goddess of the oak trees whose priestess enacted an annual sacred marriage with the king of Rome, who participated as Jupiter. The festival was a variation of the celebration of the marriage of Zeus and Hera which took place in Athens. Various springs and lakes were sacred to her. A.G.H.
