Bel is a generic address of "lord," Mesopotamian (Babylonian-Akkadian), and was often reserved for the god Marduk name also appears in the Vetus Testamentum. In the New Year's festival, akitu, the ceremony of "leading Bel by the hand" is included. The name at Palmyta also designates the tutelary creator god whose attributes include lightening and the eagle. A.G.H.
