Bodhisattva


Bodhisattva, one whose essence is perfect knowledge, is the generic title for a buddha-designate. Term is used in northern India, Tibet, China, and Japan; and may be applied in any of the earlier stages of a future buddha. The most significant include Avalokitesvara, Maitreya and Manjusri. A.G.H.
