Ammut was a chthonic underworld goddess and devouress of the dead. She was a significant deity who allegedly consumed the dead if their hearts were found weighed down with guilt in the Judgment Hall of the Two Truths during the Weighing of the Heart ceremony. Ammut has a fearsome aspect, and sits alongside the forty-two juror gods named in the Book of the Dead. She is depicted with the head of a crocodile, trunk and forelimbs of a lion, and the hind part of a hippopotamus. A.G.H.
