Palmistry - The art of hand reading

Palmistry also known as Chiromancy
is part of the chirology (from the Greek quiro-keir = hand, and logia-logos = study, science) in charge of the study of the morphology (form) of hands, fingers, palm and lines. In particular, chiromancy focuses on the analysis of the lines and hills of the hands and their relationship with the psychological and physiological profiles of people.

Some place their true origins in India (Samudrik Shastra), more than 3,000 years ago.

Palmistry as a science

It must be said that this is a controversial issue. On one hand, some scholars have verified the existence of relations between the furrows and folds of the hand with the physical and psychic traits of the people. In this way, the attempts to analyze the profile of a person through the reading of the hand would be endorsed. The basis of this conception lies in the existence of "chemical relations between (unrelated) human genes, thus linking different phenotypic characters."

It must be admitted that palmistry is today a "pseudoscience" not accepted by scientific knowledge. One of the most complete and ancient manuscripts is from Serafin Spoccani and his "Scienza della mano or sia chiromanzia" (year 1711), quoted by the University of Delawere. In this manuscript the author provides a detailed explanation of the art of palmistry. Practitioners of this art tried to diagnose diseases, reveal character, predict the future through lines and other features of the hand. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it had a great rise in Europe. From this practice the science became interested in the subject with anatomical, morphological and dermatological investigations. See some medical findings in The First Scientific Investigations into the Hand.

There is relatively little scientific research to verify the rigor of chiromancy as a system of analysis. On the other hand, many of the written works have been written by people who practice it themselves (eg 10 Years of Hand Analysis Research by Martijn van Mensvoort). No scientific data has yet been provided to demonstrate the claims of practitioners.

On the other hand, research has been carried out on chiromancy in relation to other fields, especially medical conditions such as the relationship between the simian line and the Downs Syndrome. There are also research papers that relate characteristics of the hand to psychological diseases such as Attention Deficit Disorder and AD / HD Hyperactivity or Schizophrenia (see http://www.dse.nl/~frvc/handresearch/publications.htm) or the Finger length with homosexuality, depression and fitness for music (http://human-nature.com/nibbs/02/manning.html).

Palmistry - Techniques for hand reading

Palmistry consists in the valuation of the personality or the prediction of the future of a person by means of the reading of its hand and of the lines and the reliefs of the same one. Some professionals also pay attention to the characteristics of the fingers, traces, shape, color and texture of the hand. Reading is usually started with the hand that most uses it and in some palmistry schools it is believed that the other hand contains data on karma, previous lives or hereditary traits.
