Oculus

In ancient times, since the bow of a vessel was the sanctuary of the patron deity, the oculus (a round whole in the bow) was an "eye" that supposedly enabled the ship to find its path through the sea. Interesting, this concept of the eye (now used as a religious symbol) is found in many European churches where the oculus, a round window, is located high on the west side of these churches. A.G.H.
