Invisible playmates

Sir Alister Hard developed this phrase to describe the spontaneous conversation of children with invisible or imaginary friends. The speculation surrounding this phenomenon questions whether it involves some mystical or paranormal aspect, or whether the children are just substituting invisible friends for real ones.
