The embodiment of a Godhead in human or animal form. The concept of incarnation is prevalent in all religions. In Christianity Jesus Christ, supposedly God, became man. The Egyptians believed the Pharaohs were the carriers of the sun god Re, the "divine light." Zeus, Poseidon, and Apollo, Greek gods, were incarnated in many forms. The Hindu god Vishnu has been seen in many avatars. In the religion of Mahayana Buddhism the buddhisattvas became incarnated to help desperate people. In Tibet, both the Dalai Lima and Tashi Lima are believed to be incarnations. And, in Islam, the Imams and the Madhi are incarnations of the Divine Being. A.G.H.
