Joseph Campanelia

Joseph Campanelia, an Italian philosopher, scholar, and social utopian, was an important figure in Renaissance humanism. While advocating the privacy of philosophy and religion in the world of thought and civic government, he wrote significant works concerning magic and astrology. He was arrested several times on the suspicion of heresy and managed to clear his record, but finally fled to France for safety.

His The Messiah’s Monarchy and The City of the Sun (that contains a description of a utopian society with original notions on political and educational reforms) along with his many other works on philosophy, medicine, theology, politics, magic, and astrology have assured his status as a notable thinker and occultist. A.G.H.
