Friends of God

This was a mystical society founded in Germany during the 14th century whose purpose was to minister to the pour by preaching and the sacrament. Its membership included men and women from every social class: monks, nuns, knights, farmers, artisans, and merchants. Their law was: “That universal love, commanded by Christ, and not to be gainsaid by his vicar.” Their prophecies and warnings roused the ire of certain clergy, and they were accused of sectarianism. A.G.H.
