Adibuddha, the primeval buddha, is believed to be the primordial cosmic force from which the five dhyanibuddhas arose. This is the embodiment of the concept of emptiness. Some authorities consider him to be identical with Vaharaja and Vajrasattva. Other Buddhist deities often carry his image of him sitting on a lotus leaf. His epithets include Svabhava (self-creating) and Svayambhu (self-enlightened). A.G.H.
