Abraham the jew, the man was probably born in Mayence, and traveled widely through Austria, Hungary, and Greece then through Palestine to Egypt. At Arachi, on the banks of the Nile, he met a sage named Abra-Melin who initiated him to the magical secrets.
Abrahan returned to Wurzburg, Germany where he began to practice alchemical research (see Alchemy). Also, he attempted to apply the magical arts to politics and to convert his children to occult philosophy. At ninety-six years of age, he compiled his famous work, The Secret Magic of Abra-Melin, which he left to the legacy of his son Lamech. In it he specified details of the invocation of angelic forces and presented a series of rituals which required six months to perform.
Abraham’s magical system had great influence on the occultist Aleister Crowley; and in 1976 the pseudonymous «Georges Chevalier» published a diary based on his experience with ceremonial invocations. A.G.H.
