Adam, in alchemy, is another name for prima materia. The name was thought to be a derivative of the Hebrew adom, meaning "red earth"; therefore, reasonably the alchemists referred to the prima materia as the red earth. Legend has it the secret of the philosopher's stone was divinely revealed to Adam and then transferred from Paradise to the safe keeping of the holy patriarchs. Adam was thought to be hermaphroditic before the fall, meaning a fusion of opposite polarities representing spiritual unity. A.G.H
