In Judaism, and also in the teachings of the Kabbalah, God who created the world was not in it or of it. Having a neither beginning nor end he was named En Sof, which means "Without End." To avoid using the name of God, the Kabbalist Azrial ben Menachan when writing the Bahir in 1240 created En Sof as a symbolic substitute. A.G.H.
