Calchas

Calchas, in Homer's Illad, is the prophet and diviner (see Divination) of the Greek army in Troy who divined the cause of the plague they suffered. He foresaw the victory that would result from the building of the wooden horse; he was the diviner at the sacrifice of Iphigenia that launched the Trojan attack; and he prophesied sequent actions that led to Troy's defeat. It was his fate to die when he met a diviner superior to himself. A.G.H.
