Black Hen, The Fast of
In Hungary
and adjacent countries it was believed that if a person was robbed and wanted
to discover the thief, he must take a black hen and fast for nine Fridays.
The thief would either return what was stolen or die. This was called "taking
up the black fast" against anyone.
Much lore about black hens is to be found in the works of Angelo de Gubernatis.
